KCR Govt entered MOU for coal imports in 2016

  • Lambasts K.T Rama Rao over lies on coal sourcing

Hyderabad, October 16: Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy hit back aggressively over baseless allegations made by BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao on sourcing of coal for Yadaadri Thermal Power Plant. He exposed the MOU entered by the previous BRS government with MSTC (Metal Scrap Trade Corporation Limited) for importing 50 percent of G9 coal.

The Chief Minister on Thursday addressed a press conference in the context of the prevailing El Niño situation, at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Telangana Secretariat along with various ministers and MLAs.

He said the KCR government entered an MOU with MSTC in December 2016 for importing 7 million tonnes of G9 coal for Yadadri plant. Instead of choosing a location with water and coal availability, KCR opted for Damaracherla to build the Yadadri plant. Due to this, we are now forced to face a burden of Rs 50,000 crore, which will extend to Rs 1 lakh crore of unnecessary additional financial burden over next 25 years.

After having entered the MOU for importing G9 coal in 2016, the BRS leaders are now advocating for using different quality coal, he remarked. While the unit power cost in Singareni and NTPC power plants is between Rs 4.29 and 4.63, the expenditure for generating unit in YTPS is Rs 6.66, he added.

The CM expressed readiness for any kind of enquiry into this matter. The BRS government’s actions in the past have put us in a position to import 14 million tonnes of coal.

“I am ready for any investigation on coal imports. KTR should respond as to which agency should take up the enquiry.”

The BRS government decided to build the YTPS at the cost of pushing Singareni into losses, he explained. The cost of project would have been much lower if it were built at Manuguru, he added.
